HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center Receives Recognition From Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program

Green Bay – HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center has been recognized by the Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program for its fast work in saving the lives of patients suffering from stroke.

The recognition stems from the hospital’s door-to-imaging time, or, how quickly the medical team is able to provide a stroke patient a CT scan once they’ve arrived at the hospital.  A CT (computerized tomography) scan is one of the first tests performed to determine the type of stroke the patient is having, as the type of stroke depends on the type of treatment to be administered. HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center is recognized for having the most improved door-to-imaging time among all 47 Wisconsin champion hospitals that participate in the Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program.

“A stroke can happen to men and women of all ages,” said Jason Helgeson, Executive Director of Neuro Science at HSHS – Eastern Wisconsin Division.  “And, when someone is having a stroke, every minute that passes until they receive the appropriate medical treatment can mean the difference between life and death. We are extremely proud of this recognition from the Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program and most of all, our work in saving lives.”

In 2001, Congress charged the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with implementing state-based registries that measure, track and improve the delivery and quality of stroke care. A national registry was established and named the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry (PCNSR), after the late U.S. Senator who suffered a fatal stroke in 2000 while serving in Congress. The Wisconsin Coverdell Stroke Program is one of several state-based registries across the U.S. established as a result of and funded by the PCNSR.
